The temple is significant as one of the most important Pallava-period monuments in Kanchipuram and an early example of mature Dravidian temple architecture in Tamil Nadu. It is also valued for its sandstone sculptures, inscriptions and historical role in the development of South Indian temple architecture.

📜History

Kailasanatha Temple was built during the Pallava period and is historically associated with Pallava king Narasimhavarman II, also known as Rajasimha. It is one of the earliest surviving structural temples in Kanchipuram and preserves important Pallava-period inscriptions and sculptural traditions.

🏛Architecture

The temple is an early Dravidian structural temple built largely of sandstone. It has a sanctum for Shiva, a prominent vimana, an enclosed prakara and numerous subsidiary shrines. The temple is known for Pallava sculptural reliefs depicting forms of Shiva, including Somaskanda panels, and for its richly carved walls and shrine niches.
