The best-known mythology of Kallalagar Temple is connected with the Chithirai festival of Madurai. In this sacred narrative, Lord Kallalagar, identified with Vishnu, proceeds from Azhagar Kovil to Madurai to attend the wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. By the time he reaches the Vaigai River, the wedding has already taken place. The lord then enters the Vaigai, blesses the assembled devotees and returns to Azhagar Kovil, making this journey one of the most dramatic ritual events of Tamil Nadu.
Another strand of local sacred tradition connects the lord’s descent to the Vaigai with the deliverance of Manduka Maharishi. The sage, associated with a curse that gave him a frog-like form, receives divine grace through the presence of Kallalagar. This episode is remembered during the river-entry rites, where the lord’s compassion and protective role are emphasized for devotees who gather on the riverbanks.
The name Thirumaliruncholai evokes the image of Vishnu dwelling in a lush grove-covered hill. The sacred Noopura Gangai, also called Silambaru, is linked in temple tradition with divine presence in the hills.
