⭐Temple Significance

The temple is a Divya Desam celebrated in the hymns of the Alvars and is traditionally known as a principal shrine of Sri Vaishnavism. It is especially revered for Lord Ranganatha in reclining form and for its long-standing liturgical, architectural and pilgrimage importance.

📜History

The temple has a long recorded history with inscriptions and endowments from several South Indian ruling periods. The complex received patronage and additions under the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara rulers and Nayaks. No single historically documented founder is accepted for the entire present temple complex, which developed over many centuries.

🕉️Mythology

According to the temple's sacred tradition, the image of Lord Ranganatha and the Ranga Vimana were worshipped by Brahma and later by the Ikshvaku lineage. In the Sri Vaishnava tradition, Sri Rama gave the deity to Vibhishana, and when Vibhishana placed it at Srirangam, the deity remained there. The south-facing posture of Lord Ranganatha is traditionally connected with this legend and with Vibhishana's devotion.

🏛Architecture

The temple is a large Dravidian temple complex with seven concentric prakaras and numerous gopurams. It is noted for its monumental Rajagopuram, the Ranga Vimana over the sanctum, large mandapams, subsidiary shrines and extensive ritual spaces. The complex is widely regarded as one of the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world.
