⭐Temple Significance

The temple is one of the most important shrines of Lord Shiva as Nataraja. It is revered as the Akasha Sthalam among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised in the Tamil Shaiva hymns, and a major sacred centre connected with the theology and iconography of Shiva's cosmic dance.

📜History

The temple is historically associated with extensive Chola patronage, and inscriptions record gifts and endowments to the shrine. Chola king Parantaka I is traditionally and historically associated with gilding the roof of the Chidambaram shrine. The temple also received later patronage and additions under subsequent South Indian ruling powers, including Pandya, Vijayanagara and Nayak patrons. No single founder or original builder is documented for the entire temple complex.

Temple tradition associates Chidambaram with the Thillai forest, where Lord Shiva is believed to have revealed his Ananda Tandava, the dance of bliss, to the sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada. The Chidambara Rahasyam is a central religious tradition of the temple, where the formless aspect of Shiva as Akasha is symbolically represented. These accounts belong to the temple's sacred tradition and mythology.

The temple complex is known for its large enclosed layout, four major gopurams, and sacred halls associated with the worship of Nataraja. The Chit Sabha and Kanaka Sabha are especially important to the temple's ritual and iconographic identity. The complex also includes the Sivaganga temple tank and halls such as the Raja Sabha. The gopurams are noted for sculptural panels connected with classical dance iconography.
