In local religious tradition, the hill is called Vedagiri because the Vedas are associated with the form or sanctity of the hill. Lord Shiva as Vedagiriswarar is worshipped as the divine presence on this Vedic hill, making the ascent to the shrine an act of pilgrimage and reverence.
The temple is widely known as Pakshi Theertham because of the famous legend of two sacred eagles. Local tradition describes the birds as sages who received a curse and came daily to the hill to worship Shiva and receive food from the temple priest. For generations, the appearance of these eagles formed an important part of the temple’s public memory and religious identity, and the name Tirukazhukundram is connected with kazhugu, the Tamil word for eagle or vulture.
Another important tradition is linked with Sangu Theertham, the sacred tank at the foot of the hill.
