The temple was built under the Chola emperor Rajendra I at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the capital he established in the 11th century CE. It is historically associated with the imperial Chola period and forms part of the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples along with the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram.
