The earliest phase of Chamundeshwari Temple is not documented with certainty. The shrine grew in importance under the Wodeyar rulers of Mysore, who ruled from the late medieval period and made the goddess their family deity. Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar, who ruled in the 17th century, is associated with important works on Chamundi Hills, including the construction of the flight of steps leading up the hill. The great Nandi on the hill is also connected with this phase of royal patronage. These works show the integration of the hill shrine into the religious and political landscape of Mysore.
In the 19th century, Krishnaraja Wodeyar III undertook major renovation and embellishment of the temple. He is associated with the construction or renovation of the prominent gopura and with gifts to the goddess, including ceremonial items used in worship. In local sacred tradition, she is the goddess who killed Mahishasura, the buffalo-demon whose name is connected with the old identity of Mysuru as Mahishuru.
According to the mythological narrative, Mahishasura acquired great power and oppressed gods and beings. The combined divine energies of the gods manifested as the goddess, who fought and defeated him. Her victory represents the triumph of dharma over arrogance, violence and disorder. On Chamundi Hills, this story is given a powerful visual presence through the temple of the goddess and the well-known statue of Mahishasura near the summit.

Chamundeshwari Temple is built in the South Indian Dravidian temple style. Its most visible feature is the tall, multi-tiered gopura at the entrance, a hallmark of later South Indian temple architecture. The tower is ornamented with stucco figures and rises above the approach to the sanctum, marking the transition from the outer hilltop space into the sacred precinct of the goddess.
The temple plan includes the main sanctum, an antarala and halls used by devotees and priests during worship. The goddess is enshrined in the garbhagriha, the innermost sacred space.
